The Party Origins

Our party was formed in 1977 to fill the obvious void that existed in relation to the Loyalist working-class which was being under-represented and mis-represented.

We believe that there must be 'sharing of responsibility' between Unionists and Nationalists as the best method of governance for Northern Ireland. Constitutional Nationalists have accepted the 'principle of consent' which means Northern Ireland will remain part of the United Kingdom so long as the majority so wish it.

Therefore, Nationalists, being a sizeable minority and our fellow-citizens, must have an executive role in any legislature which may come into being. Some people refer to this method of government as 'power sharing'. We are a Party of the 'common people' therefore, we are Labour-oriented. We believe in commonality, equality, and plurality. We represent and attract our support from the working-class, the non-working class and the under-class.

Our membership is open to any citizen of Northern Ireland regardless of creed or colour. We are completely anti-sectarian and desire an equitable society in which everyone is able to propound their political and religious beliefs without let or hindrance proving it is carried out within the law of the land.

We are dedicated to a Written Constitution and a Bill of Rights to safeguard minorities and institutions. Genuine grievances must he addressed and redressed whether it pertains to the minority or majority population.

We are firm on the Union with Great Britain because we believe that it is best for our Country in freedom, democratic and economic terms.

We make no apology for our British/Irishness and we respect those who, non-violently espouse a different political philosophy.

We are prepared to voluntarily co-operate with our neighbours in the Irish Republic on matters of mutual concern without interference in each other's internal affairs.

We will strive to eradicate the divisions which have plagued our society for over four hundred years and speed the day when we can revel in our diversity.

For all time, we earnestly desire peace in our Country but it cannot be peace at any price.

A great new work
