The Progressive Unionist Party actively supports the release of all persons imprisoned for activities carried out in the cause and furtherance of the armed conflict in Northern Ireland. The mechanics of such a phased release should be worked out through dialogue between the Northern Ireland Office and representatives of the various prisoner reference groups, and must take into account the feelings and sensitivities of those who have suffered mentally and physically as a consequence of violence.
The party calls for the development of a comprehensive user-led programme to help facilitate the reintegration of released prisoners back into family and community life. Such a programme must include the provision of accountable financial support for the establishment and implementation of Centres to be staffed by the trusted confidants of prisoners and their families.
