Rebels without a Clue

Paul Morrow

So many international politicians and media organisations have venerated Sinn Fein and Gerry Adams over the past thirty years for their just struggle against the oppressive face of Unionism that the truth about these Freedom Fighters has been lost amidst the mass of propaganda.

That propaganda is nothing more than badly written Pulp Fiction that paints a picture of an armed socialist resistance at war to liberate the people of Ireland from British aggression. It describes an Orwellian society weighted against the catholic population and The Cause to free and unite the island of Ireland so everyone will live happily ever after.

The importance of this foreign perception has nurtured and fed the Bullet & Ballot Box strategy from afar but more importantly it has provided the world with the myth that Sinn Fein stand for an agenda of Unity & Equality.

Thirty years of armed struggle by the IRA has not succeeded, even a little bit, in uniting the communities in Ulster in a common objective built upon peace. The truth is that thirty years of death, depravity and destruction as polarised further the two communities that might have found common ground in this the 21st century.

The Provos sought to overthrow the authorities to the state and replace the Unionist Elite with an equitable and fair government. What they now seek to achieve is the surrender of every principle held dear by the Unionist family by the denial of common rights, aspirations and heritage and the refusal to recognise that the majority of population are still Unionist still British.

If the Struggle has singularly failed in uniting the people of Ulster; if the Struggle has singularly failed to unite Ireland, then what is to be achieved by the childish denial of the rights of man by trying to subjugate him to abide in rules than are only acceptable to Sinn Fein? The Oppressed have become the Oppressors. It is not exactly an act of revolution if all you wish to do is to simply change poles.

The Good Friday Agreement was never a perfect solution to the troubles of Ulster but I gleaned from it a willingness and endeavour that might bring change not only to Ulster, not only to Ireland but also to the whole British Isles. The war of words and reputations has blighted the spirit of the agreement and it has to be said, none more so than by Sinn Fein.

The past few years has seen great risks taken both politically and personally by moderate unionism. Challenges have been set not only to the political landscape of unionism but also to the way it thinks. We have neither seen nor heard any reciprocation from Sinn Fein who stand by and watch the rug being pulled from beneath the feet of moderates. Indeed Sinn Fein frequently attempt to pull that same rug as well, oblivious to the consequences of their actions.

These rebels have no cause left other than to dictate to all our society. They seek to attain rights without responsibilities. They seek to be the new Elite.

He may accomplish by craft and subtlety, in the long run, what he cannot do by force and violence in the short one.

We have become the oppressed. By we I refer to both Protestant and Catholic decent working class people. We must all be liberated and assume our common rights and aspirations with responsibilities to each other. We must seek to free our oppressor but first we must free ourselves. We cannot allow a new era of Elitism to subject us all to the miseries of the past. Our children would never forgive us and nor should they if we stand idly by and watch Sinn Fein and the DUP become the political driving forces in Ulster come the next election.

Sinn Fein must recognise before it is too late that they cannot play God with peoples futures or maybe my assumption is right when I say that they are, Rebels without a clue.

As a footnote now that Party Conference is over I would like to add that the direction we must take as a Party is now most definitely defined. (Unless I have completely misinterpreted the speeches of Both David Ervine & Billy Hutchinson and the passionate debate of the motions presented to conference.) Now is the time to stand with unity and initiate our own township rebellions. The message was loud and clear that people should be driven to cry out for what they need and not what they want. There is a lot of need that requires attention and we must play our part in trying to deliver it. The 14th October 2000 should mark the first day of real change in the political landscape of our province. Those who poison our children with drugs will not be tolerated. Those who deny our children an equal standard of education will be exposed as elitist. Those who withhold from the people the basic right to food, warmth and shelter will be held accountable before the masses. Both Protestant and Catholic share these common needs and as such we must make the demands for each and everyone of us. Finally a word to the Conservative Right-wing Traditionalist,

A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives the superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defence of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason.

Figure it out for yourselves.
